For many homeowners, the decision to remodel is not only exciting and nerve-wracking; it’s a significant financial investment and a disruption to their everyday routine. It’s important to have a set plan of action in place so you can know what to expect throughout the process, making you feel better prepared before the project even begins. Here is a list of some of the key areas you should consider before you undertake a new remodeling project:

    1. Why do you want to Remodel?

Many homeowners choose to renovate their homes for a variety of reasons, as there are almost as many reasons to fix up a home as there are remodeling projects to choose from.

In 2020, the most common reason we see for renovating is the need for additional space. As working from home becomes more and more common, it seems homeowners are developing new priorities for their home and design trends are changing as a result. While homes have always partially served as a part-time office, gym or study for homeowners, a dedicated and private space has become an increasing priority to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of one’s home.

While comfort and enjoyment are a necessity, a remodeling project can also significantly increase the value of your home if done correctly. Specifically, kitchens and baths are the primary areas in a home where you can tell if money has been well spent, as they are the most expensive in terms of construction and where homeowners spend the majority of their leisure time.

    2. Choose the Right Remodeling Contractor

When you decide that it’s time to begin remodeling, you have to first find the right people for the job. Your remodeling contractor should have plenty of referrals and reviews to ensure they have suitable qualifications to tackle the job. When looking at reviews, make sure you look for what made it a positive experience; look at how the contractor handled any issues that arose and whether he or she would use the same contractor again.

Another important factor is understanding any upfront costs that your contractor may require before beginning your project. Do you have designs? Do you need help getting permitting or dealing with the city? Have you picked out decor? These are all things you need to consider so you can ask the right questions when it comes down to decision time and finding the perfect builder or remodeler for the job.

    3. Lockdown your Budget and Timeline

If you are planning an extensive remodel of your kitchen, bathroom or living space there will be a period the project disrupts your daily routine, especially as more and more people continue to work from home. You need to ask your remodeler whether or not it is okay to continue living at home, or if you possibly need to leave while the demolition and construction take place.

Preparing a general timeline of when you would like to begin your project and how long you expect the remodel process to take will ensure you and your remodeling contractor are on the same page.

As the homeowner, you are making the financial investment in your home as remodels often come with a price tag. It is important to decide what you can afford and how your remodeling contractor can work with your timeline and budget to mitigate any additional disruptions. Although it is rare, some remodel contractors offer on time and on budget guarantees that can remove some of that stress from the decision process. There is nothing more reassuring than knowing your remodel will be completed exactly according to the fixed budget.
